Jidiš v židovském etnolektu a moderní židovská literární identita v Čechách

The information that Czech words like chabrus, košer, mešuge, šmé, šoufl originate in Yiddish can be easily found in ethymological dictionaries. However, fewer people know that Yiddish or Jewish German is the lexical basis of the Czech Jewish ethnolect. However, ethnolectal vocabulary can be found in a stylized form in texts by Vojtěch Rakous, Karel Poláček, Norbert Frýd or the almost unknown Jiří Kraus.

The contribution of this monograph is not only the corrected set of Czech Jewish ethnolect captured in Ruth Bondy’s Mezi námi řečeno (Told between us), but above all its supplementation with ethymological interpretation and the expansion of information concerning the distribution of selected Yiddishisms in the Central European context (Yiddish influenced both Polish and German, including the German of Czech Germans). Although the focus of this publication is on Yiddishisms in the speech of Czech Jews (see the summary treatment in the glossary), the author also traces the penetration of this language into general Czech and other dialects, including urban speech (e.g. Brno) and, last but not least, into Argot, or the so-called language of secular people. Since there is no book on Yiddish or Yiddishkeit available in Czech, the analysis of the lexicon is preceded by a discussion of the structure of this language and its role in our territory. There is also a brief overview of Yiddish literature published in the Czech lands in the 17th and 18th centuries.
