Auschwitz ist existent Ein Motiv der Shoah-Literatur

Abstract:

The words of T. W. Adorno, that „to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbahwitz is barbaric,“ interpret the Shoah as horrors that are not possible to aestheticize. The artistic work has to reflect shared guilt in that horror. That responsibility projects itself even into prose that takes as its theme the ,second half-life‘ of the experience of the Shoah: the postwar life of those who returned from the Nazi camps. The fates of the survivors were often traumatic. Attesting to this are the works of several Central European authors, for example Adolf Rudnicki, Arnošt Lustig, Josef Škvorecky, Leopold Lahola, Henryk Grynberg, Primo Levi, Imre Kertesz and Ruth Kluger. The article analyzes especially two motifs: the suppression (rejection) of Jewishness and the bringing into doubt of the parental role. These works can be described as a polemic with the master narrative: the generally acknowledged texts and perceptions of the Shoah.
